Free Courses, Internships, Donation Drive

We’re gearing up for the Spring’s 2nd session for free VUB college-preparatory modules, with some self-paced/open entry classes, and online/hybrid options for you to choose from, in addition to the Success Workshop series.  See your VUB advisor at the Prescott or Verde Valley campuses to sign up today!

If you would like to help a currently deployed veteran, VUB is collecting donations for care packages for the Blue Star Moms’.  Drop your donations of small items (non-perishable individual packets/servings of candy, powdered drinks, paperback books, small games, toiletries, CDs) at the VUB office in Prescott Rm 1-209, or Verde Valley Rm M-125.

Student Veterans of America is proud to announce the Internship Support Program (ISP) application is now open for the second consecutive year! The ISP provides student veterans with a monthly stipend to offset the financial burden of an unpaid internship. SVA will award up to fifty (50) ISP stipends. For every four (4) weeks of their internship, SVA will provide a $500 allowance. Since internships are an invaluable way to get an inside look at a potential career, and often leads to a job offer, we are providing financial support to unpaid internships as an added incentive. Applications will be accepted from now until April 15, 2012 and finalists will be notified by the end of April. For more information or to apply for one of these scholarships, please visit log in and click on the Internship Support Program (ISP) link in the Member Services Homepage!

Please see the link pasted below for information regarding the 10 Go-Daddy Scholarships (deadline March 30, 2012). http://www.godaddy.com/scholarship/default.aspx?isc=smfbfos

Reno's Veterans Guesthouse next to our VA Hospital is in the running for Home Depot's $25,000 monthly grant. They need all the votes that they can get. So help us out by going to www.veteransguesthouse.org and click on "vote now". This is done through Facebook, so you have to have a Facebook account to do it. You can vote once a day through this Thursday.

Scholarships, Service Opportunity, More Resources to Share

There are lots of resources for Veterans out there today.  While this is good news, it can also be a bit overwhelming, and as usual, you need to be careful about what information you give and check out organizations on the Better Business Bureau or other watchdog sites to make sure they are legitimate.  These appear to be the "real deal."

The non-profit organization Student Veterans of America has much to offer in their newsletter – to join, go to: http://studentveterans.org
Google and Student Veterans of America (SVA) have partnered to offer 8 scholarships to student veterans of $10,000 a piece!  The deadline is March 15, so get online to review the application requirements asap.
Service Opportunity for Post 9/11/01 Veterans: http://www.missioncontinues.org/ - some of these positions may be paid internships, so check it out.
If you want additional support in making transition to civilian life smoothly, the Transition Assistance Program has online webinars & resources about resume writing, job fairs, and obtaining government employment @ http://www.turbotap.org/register.tpp  On this page, there is also a link to video modules from the Department of Labor about your Employment Readiness, which can be downloaded/viewed at your convenience – some great info.
If you or a friend is dealing with PTSD, TBI or depression, many of the tips here may help you, and this is good information to share with others: http://www.brainline.org/content/2011/07/lost-found-what-brain-injury-survivors-want-you-to-know.html
Lastly, if you are in the Prescott or Verde Valley area, and want to check out our VUB program, please contact us, or sit in on one of our weekly academic workshops (Thursdays at 3-4:30 on both campuses.)
